Understanding Quilt Binding Basics
Quilt binding is the fabric strip that wraps around the raw edge of a finished quilt, covering the seam where the quilt top, batting, and backing meet. Press the entire joined strip in half lengthwise, wrong sides together, to create the double-fold binding. This pressed strip is now ready to attach to the quilt. Attaching Binding to Your Quilt
Start attaching the binding on one side of the quilt, not at a corner. Leave a 6-8 inch tail of unsewn binding at the starting point, then sew along the edge with a 1/4 inch seam allowance. When you reach a corner, stop sewing 1/4 inch before the corner, pivot, and fold the binding up at a 45-degree angle, then fold it back down to align with the next edge. Continue around all four sides. When you reach the starting point, overlap the beginning and ending tails by about 2 inches, trim the excess, and join them with a diagonal seam.
