How to Calculate Roof Area with Pitch
Flat roof area equals the building footprint. But pitched roofs have more surface area. Calculate the pitch factor using the Pythagorean theorem: the square root of 1 plus (rise/run) squared. For a 6/12 pitch: sqrt(1 + (6/12)^2) = 1.118. Multiply the flat area by this factor for one side, then double for both sides. A 40x30 building with 6/12 pitch has 1,200 sq ft per side x 1.118 = 1,342 sq ft per side, or 2,684 sq ft total, which equals 27 squares. Always round up to the next whole square when ordering.
