Countertop Calculator

Calculate countertop square footage and cost for your kitchen or bathroom. Enter dimensions for each section to get total area, material cost, and edge detail pricing.

About This Calculator

Pricing a new kitchen or bathroom countertop starts with accurate square footage, but the calculation isn't as simple as measuring your cabinet footprint. Countertops overhang the cabinets by 1-1.5 inches, backsplashes add surface area, and cutouts for sinks and cooktops don't subtract as much material as you'd think because fabricators charge for the full slab regardless of cutouts. Natural stone like granite and quartzite comes in slabs, and you're buying the whole slab even if your project only uses part of it. Our countertop calculator estimates total material and edge finishing costs.

The Formula Behind This Calculator

Area = Sum of section Lengths * Widths Cost = Area * Price/sq ft + Edge treatment + Installation

Understanding the math helps you verify results and make better decisions for your project.

How to Use

  1. 1Measure each countertop section length in feet and depth in inches.
  2. 2Standard kitchen depth is 25.5 inches (with 1.5" overhang).
  3. 3Enter installed price per square foot for your material choice.
  4. 4Enter linear feet of exposed edges needing finished edge treatment.
  5. 5Click Calculate for total square footage and installed cost.

When to Use

  • Getting an accurate cost estimate for a kitchen or bathroom countertop replacement
  • Comparing installed costs between granite, quartz, marble, and laminate for the same layout
  • Planning a kitchen renovation budget and needing the countertop line item priced out

Tips

  • Measure each section separately — L-shapes, islands, and bar overhangs all add square footage
  • Get at least 3 fabricator quotes — installation quality varies as much as price in the countertop industry
  • Edge treatment costs add up quickly — only finish edges that are visible, not sides against walls or appliances

FAQ

How much do granite countertops cost?

$40-100/sq ft installed. Entry-level granite: $40-60. Mid-range: $60-80. Exotic colors: $80-150+. Quartz runs slightly higher at $50-120/sq ft.

How do I measure an L-shaped countertop?

Measure each leg as a separate section. Don't double-count the corner. If both legs are standard depth, simply add the two lengths together and multiply by depth.

Do I need edge treatment on all sides?

Only on exposed edges visible when standing in the kitchen. Edges against walls or appliances typically get a rough-polished or squared edge at no extra charge.
