Wallpaper Calculator

Calculate how many rolls of wallpaper you need. Enter room dimensions, roll size, and pattern repeat to estimate total rolls with waste for your project.

About This Calculator

Hanging wallpaper requires precise material estimates because pattern repeats, matching seams, and trimming waste can add 15-25% to your material needs beyond the raw wall area. Unlike paint, you can't easily buy an extra quart to finish — wallpaper rolls must match dye lots, and discontinued patterns leave you stuck mid-project. The standard roll contains about 28-30 square feet of usable paper after accounting for pattern repeat and trimming losses at ceiling and baseboard. Our wallpaper calculator factors in pattern repeat, roll dimensions, and standard waste to prevent under-ordering.

The Formula Behind This Calculator

Area = Perimeter * Height - Openings Rolls = Area / 25 (usable sq ft/roll) Add 1 roll per pattern repeat

Understanding the math helps you verify results and make better decisions for your project.

How to Use

  1. 1Enter the total room perimeter in feet (sum of all wall lengths).
  2. 2Enter ceiling height in feet.
  3. 3Enter roll width and length from the product specifications.
  4. 4Enter pattern repeat in inches (0 for random match patterns).
  5. 5Count doors and windows to subtract from wall area.
  6. 6Click Calculate for total rolls needed.

When to Use

  • Ordering wallpaper for a room renovation and wanting enough rolls to avoid dye-lot mismatches
  • Accounting for pattern repeat waste when a large repeat would otherwise leave you short
  • Comparing how many rolls different wallpaper sizes and patterns require for the same room

Tips

  • Always buy at least one extra roll — pattern discontinuations mean you won't find a match later for repairs
  • Large pattern repeats (18+ inches) significantly reduce usable length per roll — check before ordering
  • Book-match patterns (every other strip reversed) are easier to install and create a more seamless look

FAQ

What is a pattern repeat in wallpaper?

It's the vertical distance before the pattern repeats itself. Large repeats (18-24") waste more paper matching seams. Random or free-match patterns have zero waste from repeats.

How much extra wallpaper should I buy?

Always buy at least 1 extra roll beyond the calculation. It covers mistakes and provides matching material for future repairs. Once a pattern is discontinued, you can't match it.

What does a standard roll of wallpaper cover?

A standard US double roll (20.5" × 33 ft) covers about 56 sq ft or roughly 2-3 strips on an 8 ft wall, depending on pattern repeat.
