Mulch Calculator — How Much Mulch Do You Need?

Estimate how many cubic yards or bags of mulch you need for garden beds. Enter bed dimensions and desired depth for an accurate material and cost estimate.

About This Calculator

Mulching your landscape beds is one of the highest-return weekend projects — it suppresses weeds, retains soil moisture, regulates ground temperature, and instantly makes your yard look professionally maintained. But estimating how much mulch you need can be frustrating when garden centers sell in 2-cubic-foot bags while landscape yards price by the cubic yard. A 10*5 foot bed mulched 3 inches deep needs about 1.25 cubic yards, or roughly 17 bags. Our mulch calculator handles the conversion between bag and bulk measurements so you can comparison shop and buy the right amount.

The Formula Behind This Calculator

Volume (cu yd) = Area * Depth / 324 Bags (2 cu ft) = Volume * 13.5 Cost = Bags * Price

Understanding the math helps you verify results and make better decisions for your project.

How to Use

  1. 1Measure bed length and width in feet.
  2. 2Enter desired mulch depth in inches (2-3" is standard).
  3. 3Enter the price per 2-cubic-foot bag.
  4. 4Click Calculate for cubic yards, bags, and cost.

When to Use

  • Ordering mulch for garden beds before the spring planting season
  • Comparing the cost of bulk mulch delivery vs buying individual bags at the home improvement store
  • Estimating how much mulch to spread in a new landscape bed around trees or foundations

Tips

  • Bulk delivery is cheaper than bags if you need more than 10 bags — 13.5 bags equal one cubic yard
  • Don't pile mulch against tree trunks (volcano mulching) — leave a 3-6 inch gap to prevent rot and pests
  • Refresh mulch annually but measure the existing depth first — you may only need 1 inch, not a full 3-inch layer

FAQ

How deep should mulch be spread?

2-3 inches is ideal. Going thicker than 4" can suffocate plant roots and trap too much moisture, leading to rot.

How many bags of mulch equal a cubic yard?

13.5 standard 2-cubic-foot bags = 1 cubic yard. Bulk delivery is cheaper if you need more than 10 bags.

Should I remove old mulch before adding new?

If the existing layer is under 2" and not decomposed, add new on top. Remove matted or decomposed layers to prevent moisture barriers.
