Towing Capacity Calculator

Check if your vehicle can safely tow a trailer. Calculate payload capacity, tongue weight, and combined weight ratings for safe towing.

About This Calculator

Overloading your tow vehicle is dangerous and illegal — it compromises braking distance, handling stability, and the structural integrity of your hitch and frame. The key numbers every tower needs to understand are payload capacity (GVWR minus curb weight), tongue weight (typically 10-15% of loaded trailer weight), and the combined gross vehicle weight rating. Exceeding any of these limits creates serious safety risks including trailer sway, extended stopping distances, and potential loss of control. Our towing calculator checks whether your vehicle can safely handle the trailer, passengers, and cargo combined.

The Formula Behind This Calculator

Tow capacity = GCWR - Curb weight Tongue weight = 10-15% of trailer Never exceed any single rating.

Understanding the math helps you verify results and make better decisions for your project.

How to Use

  1. 1Enter your vehicle's Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) from the door jamb sticker.
  2. 2Input the curb weight (found in the manual or online).
  3. 3Estimate passenger and cargo weight you'll carry in the tow vehicle.
  4. 4Enter the total trailer weight including cargo, and the tongue weight percentage.

When to Use

  • Checking if your vehicle can safely tow a specific trailer.
  • Planning a camping trip or moving with a rental trailer.
  • Evaluating a new vehicle purchase for towing capability.

Tips

  • Tongue weight should be 10-15% of trailer weight for bumper-pull, 15-25% for gooseneck/5th wheel.
  • Weight distribution hitches can help but don't increase your vehicle's actual GVWR.
  • Always check the tow vehicle's specific tow rating — not just GVWR — from the manufacturer.

FAQ

What happens if I exceed payload capacity?

Overloading causes premature brake wear, tire failure, suspension damage, poor handling, and increased stopping distance. It also voids insurance coverage in an accident.

What's the difference between GVWR and tow rating?

GVWR is the maximum your vehicle can weigh including itself, passengers, and cargo. Tow rating is the maximum trailer weight the vehicle can pull. Both limits must be respected independently.

Do I need a weight distribution hitch?

Recommended for any trailer over 50% of your vehicle's tow rating. A WDH distributes tongue weight across all four wheels of the tow vehicle, improving stability and braking.
